about

Guam Caucus

These recordings were made in San Diego on my TEAC Portastudio. Guam Caucus were exploring African pop such as hi-life, afrobeat, juju and soukous. By early1985, they had decided to relocate to the Bay Area and their bass player had already left. They needed a temporary replacement and as I had played with both drummer David Gould and guitarist Kevin Rusk (The Victim’s Mother and The Rent respectively), and I too shared their interest inAfrican pop, thus began my short career as their bassist. We worked out some ideas and recorded these demos at Gould’s house in Mission Hills. We then recorded a few songs at Hit Single for a flexidisc to be inserted in Accretions, an ill-fated arts & culture publication. (Accretions became a label and three tracks from this studio session were released on their 30th anniversary compilation album.) Gould and Rusk soon rejoined their bassist Martin Doll in San Francisco and remained active until Doll returned to San Diego to join Burning Bridges.
